October 20, 2016 – Meeting Minutes

The regular monthly meeting of the Ladysmith Saltair Garden Club was held at the clubs new location, Ladysmith Senior Secondary School Library, 710  6th Avenue, Ladysmith, starting at 7 pm.  34 members present including the executive, Diane, Gail, Carol H., Carroll and Donna.

Gail introduced our guest speaker Bob Duncan from “Fruit Trees and More” in North Saanich accompanied by his wife Verna who provided us with an incredible presentation on “Stone Fruits”.   The Duncan’s operate a demonstration garden and nursery.  There are over 300 varieties to choose from.  They specialize in dwarf fruit trees, citrus and subtropicals – heritage and family favourites including unusual, connoisseur and hard-to-find varieties.     Marmalade made from their own citrus fruits was available for sale. 

Coffee/tea break – members were treated to apple pie and ice cream, courtesy of Rose McCulley.    Rose has for many years been making pies as a fundraiser for many different organizations.  

The business portion of the meeting was called to order by President Diane Gregory  at 8:45 pm. 

The minutes of the September meeting were adopted. 

No financial report (full report was given in September). 

Old business –

·         Treasurer, Carroll McLaurin had enquired regarding the distribution of the bursary last June as it had been reported that the recipient was taking a year off. The regulation is in place that the recipient has 2 years in which to present a copy of their registration to a post-secondary institution in order to receive the bursary.  If it is not released, the money will stay with the scholarship society as a credit for a future recipient.

·         Soil samples – Samples should be brought to the February meeting if members wish to combine orders.  Donna has volunteered to take the samples to M.B. Labs in Sidney.  The testing services provided can be found by emailing mblabs@pacificcoast.net. Tele: 250-656-1334  Copies of the requirements and costs will be available at the January meeting.

·         Library – The case has been measured and it will fit into the area that has been allocated.   Carol Henderson volunteered to arrange a date to downsize a lot of the books that are currently in the case being stored at Diane Gregorys.  Helpers will be required.   Books that are culled will either be held for the Plant Sale or donated to a local Thrift Shop. 

New Business –
·         Request that the notification of the clubs monthly meetings be advertized in the Chronicle as well as Take 5.  Jeanette Rawek volunteered to followup.

·          In lieu of a guest speaker next month, members of the club who are Master Gardeners will be available to answer any questions members may have. 

·         December Christmas Party Potluck – Executive to confirm if the Multi-Purpose Room will be available (Thursday, December 8th) as it would be more convenient with a kitchen and more space.  Committee’s will be required for 1) Entertainment 2) Centerpieces, and 3) will Santa remember us.

·         Elections – November Meeting.  Diane G. To send out a notice as to positions that need to be filled for the upcoming year.   Both executive and committees.

Field trips –
·         Pam Fraser –  Pam requesting that another member needs to take over the organizing of field trips for the club.   But……..                                          The Victoria Floral Artists Guild 2016 Floral Fantasy Show will be held November 4th and 5th, 2016 at the Cadboro Bay United Church, 2625 Artbutus Road, Victoria, has certainly been enjoyed by members in the past. And, a trip to ‘Fruit Trees and More’  July to mid October a must. 

Library –
·         See note under Old Business 

Queens Park –
·         Jennifer reported that she and Joanne have been tending both Queens Park and the Museum garden.  This past month they received help form 3 Air Cadets with the Duke of Edinburgh Program each putting in 3 hours each.  A note to be sent thanking them.    Donna to follow up. 

Plant Sale –
·         Jeanette Rawek – Announced that she will not be chairing the Plant Sale committee for 2017.   She has compiled a binder detailing every aspect of the sale and will be most happy to present it to the new chairperson. 

The meeting concluded with the drawing of door prizes.
